Fleischkuekle Recipe
If you were born and raised in North Dakota, there’s a good chance you’re more than familiar with Fleischkuekle. If you’ve never heard of a Fleischkuekle, it’s similar to a Cornish Pasty or an empanadilla. Basically, it’s a meat pie that originated from Russia and Germany, but it found its way to North Dakota and is a staple in many homes and restaurants in the state. When ordering this dish out, it can be served with ketchup or gravy, depending on where you order it from. This deep-fried dish is a favorite among many residents in North Dakota and it’s simple to make once you get the recipe down.
To make this dish, you’re going to want to start by making the dough. If you’re new to making dough, don’t be intimidated! Get a large bowl and mix together 3 cups of flour, ¼ cup of softened butter, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 ½ cup of milk, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Mix until all the ingredients are combined and then move on to the filling.
For the filling, you want to saute 2 pounds of ground beef with 1 diced medium onion, 2 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of pepper, and 1 tablespoon of garlic powder. During this part of the recipe, you can add different spices if you want to make it spicier. After the meat is done cooking, go back to your dough.
Roll out the dough until it’s quite thin. You want to make sure your dough gets cooked the whole way through so it’s crispy instead of chewy. Roll the dough into a circle and put some of the meat mixture on one side. Fold over the other side and pinch shut. Since the next step is to fry the fleischkuekle, you want to make sure none of the frying oil goes into it to the meat.
Get your oil ready over medium heat and take the temperature. Once the oil gets to 325 degrees, place the fleischkuekle in and wait until it’s golden brown on the outside. Each side should take about 5 minutes to get completely cooked.
If you don’t want to go to the trouble of frying the fleischkuekle or just want a healthier alternative, once they are assembled, bake them at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
